Success Story

A capable 18-year-old young woman, who was newly blind and had just graduated from The School for the Sight Impaired, was referred to me for assistance. This young woman wanted to put what she had learned to use and gain the confidence to get on with her life. She did not have family in the area and did not want to utilize her friends for this task and by so doing change the dynamics of their relationships. She stated that she was feeling mostly afraid and overwhelmed when considering how to successfully use her newly learned coping skills.

Action

Together, we explored ideas and options presented in the school she had attended and developed a plan to integrate her training into her current living environment. We used some creativity to individualize systems to work better for her and to fill gaps that were created by her environment. The systems we established were meant to enable her to be as independent as possible.

We also held coaching sessions to allow her to explore her new capabilities and establish goals and actionable steps to achieve them. She wanted this transition to be transparent to those that had known her before. Part of this turned to career planning as she realized that she did not like her prior position and certainly did not want to take the effort to make it work in her current situation. We evaluated her skills and enabled her to try a couple of careers of interest through volunteer positions. I also shared the finer points of job search techniques including resume writing, job lead development, and interviewing.

Results

This young woman moved on with her life as though she had not missed a beat. She is working part-time according to her desired schedule. She has put in place what she learned in school and is enjoying her life again. She gave me a tear-filled hug with a “Thank you; you’ve helped me so much. I owe you so much.”
